Study From the Book of Genesis,49

Today we study chapter 49 of the Book of Genesis. There is one biblical principle and its lesson which I believe it is useful in biblical counselling.

Jacob gathered his sons before he died to tell them the future for their descendants. Jacob began with a warm word of praise to Reuben. Reubin was the first born. However, because his shameful behaviour, he lost the firstborn privilege and that privilege passed to Joseph.

Simon and Levi also because of their excessive revenge for their sister Dina, they also lost the privilege, gathering together would be dangerous, so their descendants will be scattered in the land of Canaan after been taken by the Israelites. Jacob then showed much admire to Judah. Jacob described him as a Lion and from his descendants will come Shiloh the Lord Jesus God in flesh (the Loin of Judah). Zebulun’s descendants will stay comfortably at the haven near the sea and will be prosperous. Issachar and his descendants will be excellent in knowing the times to come and planning for the future.

However, the descendants of Dan will not be good as some of them will stray from the worship of the living God and will  serve pagan gods. Gad’s descendants will be overturned by enemies, but they will  overcome them at the end. For Asher, he will be prosperous. For Naphtali is given the goodly words.

However, there is a good deal of prophecy for Joseph. He will be fruitful and like the vine tree, its branches will climb up the walls. Benjamin’s descendants , Jacob described them as a wolf.

The last words of Jacob, he made his sons to swear that his body remains to be buried in Canaan beside his grandfather Abraham and Sarah his wife, there were buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and also Leah was buried there. Jacob then died and was gathered unto his people.

Structure:

Verses 1- 27: Jacob’s blessing

Verses 28-33: Death of Jacob.

Principle 79 verse 49:9” The sceptre shall not depart from Judah. Nor a lawgiver from between his feet. Until Shiloh comes and to Him shall be the obedience of the people.”

Lesson 79: All the Bible (old and New Testaments) speaks of the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ,God came to us in flesh and was born by the Holy Spirit from Virgin Mary.  Here the Lord Jesus is given the name of Shiloh. One day, and it will be soon, all human beings either alive or dead will bow under his feet. For the believers in Him for rewards but for unbelievers in Him for judgement.
