Study From the First Epistle of Paul to Timothy, 2
Today we continue in studying this pastoral epistle of Paul to Timothy, where we study chapter one and as usual we pick up a couple of biblical principles and lessons that can be useful in biblical counselling.
In his pastoral letter, Paul instructs his disciple in Christ to not accept any other doctrines apart from the gospel of the Lord Jesus that was handed to him personally by the Christ Himself. He then reminds him that the gospel is for sinners given by the grace of God. He confesses that he was a great sinner before Christ appeared to him in his way to Damascus to persecute Christians. But he was saved by grace. Not only that, but he suffered for the sake of Christ.
Paul then concluded this chapter by advising Timothy to fight the good fight. For the end, he will receive the crown by the Lord in heaven. This crown will be given to all faithful people who kept faith and Timothy is the first one of them.
The structure:
Verse 1: 2: greeting.
Verse 3:11: no other doctrine.
Verse 12:17: glory to God for His grace.
Verse 18: 20: fight the good fight.
Principle 1: verse 1:15: “-This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.”
Lesson: 1: No one persecuted the early Christian church more than Saul. However, no one preached forgiveness more than Paul. Yet he received God’s complete forgiveness- and so can we.
Principle 2: verse 1:20: “—of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not blaspheme.”
Lesson 2: By the authority as an apostle, Paul did that but not want God to destroy these men, but to do whatever was necessary in their lives- even severe things-to set them back into a solid faith. 17/11/2019
