Study From the Book of Romans,3
Today is the third part of the series, “Study From the Book of Romans.” Here we study the second chapter to pick up a couple of biblical principles that can be applied in biblical counselling.
Chapter two is divided into three topics:
Principle 3: 2:4: “Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance.”
Lesson 3: Salvation is the combined work of the Trinity. God leads us to repentance, the Holy Spirit leads us to the Lord Jesus, the redeemer from the penalty of sin which is eternal death. Even our repentance demonstrates the Spirit of God at work in our hearts. We repent because of the goodness of God, not because of the goodness of our hearts.
Principle 4 :2:7: “Eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honour and immorality.”
Lesson 4: According to this verse, it seems that eternal life can be gained by doing good. But Romans clearly teaches justification by faith (3:12). But Paul does not contradict himself; the subject of this verse is judgement not justification. Believers who continue in good works will receive rewards in the life to come. Whenever the NT speaks of eternal life as a present possession, it is a gift received by faith (John 3:16). However here it refers to something to receive in the future by those who are already believers, it refers to eternal rewards. So rewards will be based on works accomplished here on earth.
