Study From the Book of Nahum, 2
Today is the second part of the study. As mentioned in the first part of introduction, this book is declaring judgment on Nineveh. The nation repented and abandoned its sins at the time of Jonah. But after one hundred years, they returned to its cruel sinful behaviour. So it was the time of judgment and who can stand before the avenge of the Holy God?
In the first chapter, Nahum describes the characters of God as a judge. There are biblical principles that can be very useful in biblical counselling.
Principle 1 (1:3): “The Lord is slow to anger and great in power. And will not at all acquit the wicked.”
Lesson 1: People sometimes ask, why does God keep silent as He does not judge the wicked straight away? The answer is in this verse. He is slow to anger. He gives the wicked a chance to repent. . If they do not, He applies His judgment. His judgment is so severe that no one can stand. God is 100% love and merciful but also 100% just and fair. His just and mercy were met on the Cross.
Principle 2 (1:7): “The Lord is good, A strong hold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.”
Lesson 2: Even in His judgement, God is good. For His goodness, He does not leave the wicked without punishment. Imagine we live in a society, where criminals do whatever they like without punishment. That society would be a hell on earth. Because God is good, He is putting boundaries for the wicked, He is patient with them now, but if they continue without repentance, God judgment is inevitable, here in earth and in eternal hell.
