Study From the Book of Joel,2*
Today is the second part of this series. Today we concentrate on the suffering of the southern kingdom of Judea because of their sins and refusal to repent. The chapter talks about the severe plague of locusts. In a matter of hours, every living green thing was stripped bare.
It is clear that the suffering of this chapter is due to the sins of the people. Many other sufferings are not related to sin like when God wants to test the believers to make them mature in their faith. Other sufferings are related to mistakes of the believers when they do not make the right choices in dealing with different situations of their lives.
Scholars wonder, was the plague a real one or just a prophetic signal of that will happen at the night of the Day of the Lord, especially in the following chapters are talking about the Day of the Lord that will occur after the rupture of the church.
Principle one (1:18): “How the animals groan! The herds of cattle are restless, because they have no pasture: even the flocks of sheep suffer punishment.”
Lesson one: How often have you heard it said, “Hey what I do is no one’s business, so long as I don’t hurt anyone else”? The statement betrays a false assumption. Sin always hurts others and even animals.”
