Study From the Book of Jeremiah,8

Today is the eighth part of this series, where we are studying chapter 8 and as usual, we pick up two biblical principles and their lessons which are useful in biblical counselling.

In the day when Jerusalem’s judgement was fulfilled at the hands of its enemies, the bones of its people and their leaders would be desecrated by being removed from their graves. The gods and goddesses to whom Jerusalem looked for deliverance would stand over the people’s desecrated corpuses which are pictured here as refuse, and those who survived the siege and attack as exiles and slaves would prefer death over life.

They instead of correcting their erroneous behaviours, they were engaged in perpetual backsliding, falling deeper and deeper into sin and despair and no righteous or repentant person could be found in the city of Jerusalem. Rather than turning from sin, every person pursued his or her own course, a lifestyle leading to destruction.    

Structure:

Verses 1-3: judgement on obscene religion.

Verses 4-17: the peril of false teaching.

Verses 18-22: the prophet mourns for the people.

Principle 15, verse 8:9:   --"Behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord; so, what wisdom do they have?”

Lesson 15:  Whenever we disobey the Word of God, we reject God’s wisdom for what we consider to be more potent or effective wisdom. But it never turns out that way.

Wisdom apart from God always leads to death.

Principle 16 verse 8:22: ----- “Is there no balm in Gilead, is there no physician there? Why then is there no recovery for the health of the daughter of my people.”

Lesson 16:  Even in Jeremiah’s day, God offered hope and healing to His spiritually diseased people- but they had to come to Him and accept His prescription to find life. We will never find life anywhere else.14/1/2024.
