Study From the Book of Jeramiah, 42

Today is the 42nd part of this series where we study chapter 42 of the book of Jeremiah. Here there are two biblical principles and their lessons which are useful in Biblical Counselling.

The people asked Jeremiah to intercede with the Lord on their behalf. Jeremiah cautiously agreed to pray to God. He asked the people to agree to abide by the answer. The people responded with an oath of obedience calling upon the Lord as witness.

God responded to Jeremiah’s prayer. Jeremiah assured the people with the same words the Lord had used to give him assurance in his call: I am with you to save you and deliver you. If the people disobeyed God and fled to Egypt, they would suffer the consequences. The people’s hope for safety in Egypt is presented in a triad of phrases: see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor be hungry. The people seem to have their minds made up before they sought the word from the Lord.

However, the very thing they were trying to escape from would meet them in Egypt: sword, famine and pestilence: this common triad indicates the completeness of God’s judgement upon the disobedient.

Structure:

Verses 1-22: the flight to Egypt forbidden.

Principle 65: verse 42:6: --“Whether it is pleasing or displeasing, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God to whom we send you, that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God. “

Lesson 65: These men spoke truth, but harboured lies. It is not hard to play the part of regular churchgoer and hymn singer, but God is after the genuine faith, not well-rehearsed lines spoken convincingly.

Principle 66: verse 42:20: ---” For you were hypocrites in your hearts when you send me to the Lord your God, saying, ‘pray for us to the Lord our God, and according to all that the Lord your God says, so declare to us and we will do it.’”

Lesson 66: Before these men ever acted on their deception, Jeremiah openly revealed their hearts. We may fool others, but we do not fool God. We can never manipulate Him into giving us what we want.22/09/2024.
