Study From the Book of Jeremiah,37

Study From the Book of Jeremiah,37

Today is the thirty-seventh   part of this series where we study chapter 37. Here, there is one biblical principle and its lesson which is useful in biblical counselling.

In late spring or early summer 588 B.C., Pharoah Hophra led Egyptian army to the south of Judah. The Babylonian forces withdrew their siege of Judah and Jerusalem to confront the Egyptians. Zedekiah hoped the Babylonians would be defeated, but his hopes proved to be in vain and the Babylonians soon return to destroy Jerusalem.

Jeremiah had advised the people of Jerusalem to defect to the Chaldeans so that their lives would be spared. A number of them followed his advice. Irijah arrested the prophet and arraigned him before the court of princes.

Fearing possible exposure and oppositions from his couriers, Zedekiah secretly summoned Jeremiah and asked him a word from the Lord. He seems to have earnestly desired a word from God but could not come to grips with the reality and respond appropriately.

Structure:

Verses 1-10: Zedekiah’s vain hope.

Verses 11-21: Jeremiah imprisoned.

Principle 59:37:16: “--Jeremiah entered the dungeon and the cells …remained there many days…”

Lesson 59: God never left Jeremiah, yet the prophet spent many lonely and discouraging days in God’s service. Jeremiah’s obedience did not translate to instant blessing. It took faith to believe that God would remain faithful to the end.18/8/2024.
