Study From the Book of Jeremiah,34
Today is the thirty-fourth part of this series where we study chapter 34. Here, there is one biblical principle and its lesson which is useful in biblical counselling.
Jeremiah proclaimed the destruction of Jerusalem and the death of its inhabitants by sword, pestilence, and famine. The particular implications for Zedekiah would die in peace in Babylon meaning that he would not be executed by the sword. According to 2King.25:6,7, his sons were killed before his eyes and his eyes were put out.
When the princes of Judah emancipated their Hebrew slaves, the siege around Jerusalem was eased as Nebuchadnezzar had withdrawn from Jerusalem to meet the Egyptian army of Pharaoh Hophra. Zedekiah had hopes that Hophra would be successful in delivering Israil from its impending doom.
But when the righteous decision was reversed and the princes of Judah returned the slaves back to them, the covenant by revoking the liberty of the slaves was regarded by God as breaching the covenant between God and His people. So, Nebuchadnezzar soon renewed the siege of Jerusalem and destroyed the city.
Structure:
Verses 1-7: Zedekiah warned by God.
Verses 8-22: treacherous treatment of slaves.
Principle 55, verse 34:16: --” then you turned around and profaned My name, and every one of you brought back his male and female slaves, whom you had set at liberty ----.”
Lesson 55: Repentance is not going forwards and backwards again and again. God hates His people doing that. As we submit our lives to the Lord, there would be no turning back to sin. The Holy Spirit helps us to keep our relationship with God steady.28/07/2024.
