Study From the Book of Jeremiah,31
Today is the thirty-first part of this series where we study chapter 31. Here, there are two biblical principles and their lessons which are useful in biblical counselling.
Coinciding with restoration of the nation to its land would be a fulfilment of the covenant between God and His people Israel. This New Covenant will be initiated by God Himslef, assuring its effectiveness.
Some scholars are confused with the New Covenant mentioned here and what the Lord Jesus did on the Cross. However, from the context, this covenant will come to pass in the millennium when the Lord Jesus reigns physically from Jerusalem with all earthly blessings. For example, planting would be for regular normal enjoyment- a gift of God in the lives of His people of Israel. The blessings of the goodness of the Lord are bountiful crops, flocks, and vineyard.
For us as believers, we do not need New Covenant as we have become the children of God in Jesus Christ who bless us with all the blessings in heavens. In Jesus we have obtained the inheritance of everlasting eternal life as Paul says in the Epistle of Ephesians 1:11.
Structure:
Verses 1-14: the remnant of Israel saved.
Verses 15-22: mercy on Ephraim.
Verses 23-30: future prosperity of Judah.
Verses 31-40: a New Covenant.
Principle 49, verse 31:3: --"The Lord has appeared of old to me , saying : yes I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.”
Lesson 49: God has pledged His love to us. He walks with us through disappointment and never disillusioned by our wayward acts, for He has seen the finished portrait. He knows that, through Christ, we can and will succeed.
Principle 50, verse 31:20: ---” Is Ephraim My dear son? Is he pleasant child? For though I spoke against him, I earnestly remember him still; therefore, My heart yearns for him; I will surely have mercy on him, says the Lord.”
Lesson 50: In these words, we can hear the turmoil that we often cause our Lord. He loves us and wants to bless us, but He can never simply ignore our rebellion and sin. Yet He loves mercy above judgement.7/7/2024.
