Study From the Book of Jeremiah,28
Today is the twenty-eighth part of this series where we study chapter 28. Here, there is one biblical principle and its lesson which is useful in biblical counselling.
Hananiah, the false prophet, spoke in the name of the Lord. Using the name of the Lord as Jeremiah did to introduce a solemn message of judgement against Babylon. Building on Jeremiah’s imagery of the yoke, Hananiah proclaimed the contrary message that the yoke of Babylon would be broken by God within two years.
Hananiah also prophesied the return of the holy vessels taken by Nebuchadnezzar from the temple of God. Furthermore, Hananiah espoused the popular belief that the kingship of Zedekiah was illegitimate and that God would restore Jeconiah to the throne of Jerusalem.
Seizing the yoke from Jeremiah’s neck and breaking it before the people, Hananah made a resounding proclamation. This announcement reversed every statement of Jeremiah and advanced the cause of rebellion against Babylon by Judah and the surrounding nations, something king Zedekiah has desired. God’s response was that because Hananiah has broken the original yokes of wood, He would replace them with yokes of iron that could not be broken.
Two months after Hananiah prophesied about Judah’s captivity, the false prophet was dead.
Structure:
Verses 1-17: Hananiah’s falsehood and doom.
Principle 45, verse 28:16,17: --"Therefore says the Lord: Behold, I will cast you from the face of the earth. This year you shall die, because you have told rebellion against the Lord, so Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.”
Lesson 45: How did Hananiah teach rebellion against the Lord? He did it through a message of false peace! We never earn God’s favour by convincing anyone that sin is anything other than sin.16/6/2024.
