Study From the Book of Jeremiah,23
Today is the twenty-third part of this series where we study chapter 23. Here, there are two biblical principles and their lessons which are useful in biblical counselling.
The kings of Israel had caused the dispersion of the nation; but the Lord would mercifully bring about the restoration of the remnant. The concept of a reestablished remnant is present in many books of the Old Testament. The blessing of restoration and prosperity as a consequence of repentance is also outlined in the Bible. For example, is in Deut.30:1-10.
The term Branch is used for the promised Messiah, the Lord Jesus will reign with judgement, or justice and righteousness. The days of the Messiah’s reign would bring salvation. Both Judah and Israel would be restored. The name that characterised this ideal king is THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. The One who would establish the true righteous -rule-God’s appointed king. The verse 23:6 is one of the texts in Hebrew Bible that speaks specifically and surely of the coming of the glorious Saviour and King.
Structure:
Verses 1-8: the Branch of Righteousness.
Verses 8-40 : false prophets and empty oracles.
Principle 38 verse 23:3: --"But I will gather the remnant of My flock out of all countries where I have driven them, and bring them back to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase.”
Lesson 38: God desires to bless His people and to make them fruitful and numerous. Just as He promises to one day gather Israel and bless her, so He longs to bless us when we obey Him.
Principle 39, verse 3:6: ---“In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely; now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”
Lesson 39: when we come to Jesus Christ in faith, He becomes our righteousness. We stand before God , not on the basis of our efforts or record , but because of what He has done for us on the cross.
