Study From the Book of Jeremiah,20

Today is the twentieth part of this series where we study chapter 20. Here, there are two biblical principles and their lessons which are useful in biblical counselling.

Jeremiah’s proclamations against the city and the temple were of grave concern of Pashhur, the chief governor, because of the threat to his continuation of the cult in which he was involved. So, Jeremiah was beaten and confined to a stockade by him.

The four resources of Jerusalem that would be transported with the exiles to Babylon were wealth, produce, precious things, and treasures. Pashhur, his family and his close associates who had opposed Jeremiah would be deported to Babylon because he prophesied lies that Jerusalem would not suffer destruction.

Jeremiah decided to refrain from declaring God’s word or speaking in His name. But the divine message could not be held within or in any way hindered from accomplishing God’s purpose. God’s word was like a consuming fire in Jeremiah’s heart and bones; unless the word was unleashed, the prophet would perish. Unlike the heart of the people, Jeremiah’s mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual life was overwhelmed by God’s word and will be His people.

Whatever Jeremiah announced or denounced, the leaders of Judah turned back against him until he was devasted and demoralised to the point that he cursed his conception and birth, and hence his call from God.

Structure:

Verses 1-6: the word of God to Pashhur.

Verses 7-18: Jeremiah’s unpopular ministry.

Principle 33 verse 20:2:    --" Then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the hight gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the Lord.”

Lesson 33:  Jeremiah suffered greatly for faithfully proclaiming the word that God told him to speak. To an observer, it might not have looked as though God always rewards obedience. But a snapshot does not equal the whole story.

Principle 34 verse 20:9: ---” … His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, and I could not.”

Lesson 34: If your goals are truly from the Lord, you will have a feeling deep within you must accomplish them in order to obey the Lord and to bring benefit to others. You won’t be able to do otherwise.7/4/2024.
