Study From the Book of Jeremiah,2
Today is the second part of this series, where we are studying chapter 2 and as usual, we pick up two biblical principles and their lessons which are useful in biblical counselling.
Chapter two is presented in the form of a covenant lawsuit, an indictment brought by God against His people Israel. Jeremaih challenged the people of Judah to remember God. The nation of Israel is referred to as first-fruits which rightfully belonged to God. In the time of Jeremiah, the people of Judah no longer remembered the days when their grandfathers and grandmothers had worshipped and obeyed God.
The people of Israel lost sight of their identity as the elect of God. They forgot how God had delivered them from the oppression in Egypt and had given them food, and water and protection in the wilderness for forty years.
God’s people had forsaken Him and served worthless deities. God the fountain of living waters offered a limitless supply of fresh, life-giving substances. Instead, the people chose broken cisterns, which were useless for sustaining life.
Structure:
Verses 1-37: God’s case against Israel.
Principle 3, verse 2:5 “---What injustice have your fathers found in Me, that they have gone far from Me."
Lesson 2: No one will ever be able to blame God for their sin or for their wrongdoing habits. James says that “each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.” (James 1:14).
Principle 4, verse :2:19: --“Your own wickedness will correct you, and your backslidings will rebuke you ---.”
Lesson 4: In many cases, the consequences for choosing sin are bound up with the sin itself. God doesn’t have to add punishment to many sins, because they include punishment in their results. 3/12/2023.
