Study From the Book of Jeremiah,16

Today is the sixteenth part of this series, where we study chapter 16. Here, there is one biblical principle and its lesson which is useful in biblical counselling.

In the case of Jeremiah, the prohibition against marriage was both a sign to the nation and a blight against his name among the people. Celibacy was abnormal: large families were indicative of God’s blessing upon a household. Jeremiah faced life with God as his sole comfort and support.

The trio of terms for sorrow: mourning, lament, and bemoan is followed by a trio: peace, loving-kindness, and mercies from which Judah had been removed. The trio of questions posed by the people indicates their lack of God’s word. The people of Judah had missed the purpose for which they were chosen, to manifest to the world the nature and character of God by living as people of God.

The blessings of devotion to God was freedom, prosperity, and large families in the land. Blessing was dependant on obedience; the consequence of disobedience was a dreaded life out of the land, in a world the people did not know.

However, the days are coming and the future restoration of Israel would surpass the ancient deliverance from Egypt.

Structure:

Verses 1-13: Jeremiah’s life-style and message.

Verse 14-21: God will restore Israel

Principle 27: verse 16:16:    --"Behold, I will send for many fishermen says the Lord, ‘and they shall fish them: and afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.’ ”

Lesson 27: God will spare no effort to bless us, just as He promised. If we feel forgotten at the bottom of the sea or marooned on the far side of the moon, even from there He will retrieve us to bless us.
