Study From the Book of Jeremiah,11

Today is the eleventh part of this series, where we study chapter 11. Here there is one biblical principle and its lesson which is useful in biblical counselling.

Jeremiah’s message from the Lord here is strongly associated with the Book of Deuteronomy where the terms of the covenant are listed. A covenant is a legal treaty or relationship between the nation which is here Israel and its God. The covenant specified rights, obligations, and responsibilities of the parties entering the agreement.

The blessings of the land, as promised to Abraham, was dependant upon the loyalty of the people. The message had been the same from the beginning: listen and obey the word of God. However, they had repelled against God and the covenant and practised idolatry and broken the first of the Ten Commandments. Instead of accepting God’s punishment, and repent of their evil ways, the nation preferred to cry out to other gods for deliverance.

The passage ends by God revealing to Jeremiah a plot against his life, as the men of Anathoth insisted that Jeremiah stop prophesy in the name of the Lord, otherwise he would be killed. The threat of death to Jeremiah was answered in reverse by punishment of the people  by famine when the Babylonians besieged the city of Jerusalem.    

Verses 1-17: the broken covenant.

Verses 18-23: Jeremiah’s life threatened.

Principle 20, verse 11:14:   --"So do not pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer for them, for I will not hear them in the time they cry out to Me because of their trouble.”

Lesson 20: God banned Jeremiah from praying for the welfare of His rebellious people. They had gone so far down a road of destruction that it had become too late for them- a time known to God alone.4/2/2024.
