Study From the Book of Isaiah,38
Today is the thirty-eighth part of this series where we study chapter 42. And as usual we pick up a couple of biblical principle and lessons that can be useful in biblical counselling.
Chapter 42 has four ideas or paragraphs. The first paragraph talks about “My Servant,” refers to the Lord Jesus Christ. The Servant will come to restore the poor and needy and encourage people in the faith. Christ gave sight to the blind to show that He had the power to give everyone spiritual insight.
The second paragraph is a hymn to praise the Lord. The command is for all people to sing. The new song celebrated the second Exodus from Babylon, just as Moses’ song celebrated the first Exodus from Egypt.
In the third paragraph, Isaiah talks about the promise of the Lord to help when they were freed from Babylonian Exile, for example drying the water of the Red sea.
The fourth paragraph, Isaiah’s prophecy of the Exile to Babylon and the reason is that they have sinned against the Lord.
Structure:
Verses 1-9: the Servant of the Lord
Verses 10-13: Praise the Lord
Verses 14-20: promise of the Lord’s help
Verses 21-25: Israel, obstinate disobedience
Principle 71, verse 42:3 “-A bruised reed He will not break, and smoking flax He will not quench.”
Lesson 71: We never need to worry that when we humbly come to Christ for forgiveness or restoration or strength or wisdom, that He will despise our weakness and refuse our request. He treats the bruised and the scorched with tenderness.
Principle 72, verse 42:14 “-I have held My peace a long time, I have been still and restrained Myself. Now I will cry like a woman in labour. I will pant and gasp at once.”
Lesson 72: We often wonder why God seems to restrain His hand when we need Him to act, or why He remains silent when we need Him to speak. When He acts, He acts with power, He often does so suddenly and explosively.16/1/2022
