Study From the Book of Haggai,2
Today is the second part of the series, “Study From the Book of Haggai.” Today we study the first chapter to pick up a couple of biblical principles that can be applied in biblical counselling.
As mentioned in the introduction, the Israelites began building the temple soon after they returned from the exile, but then they stopped for 16 years, because they were busy in looking after their affairs and building and furnishing their houses.
Haggai warned them that if they continued to do that by not putting God’s command first, they would suffer because of the loss of blessings. For example, they earn money but that money disappears as if their bags have holes (verse 6). As the result of Haggai’s warning, they turned back to build the temple after they stopped for many years.
Principle 1, verse 1:7: “Thus says the Lord of hosts. “Consider your ways!”
Lesson 1: We should stop and periodically review our lives in the light of God’s Word. Very often this is all it would take to alert us to a dangerous trend or to confirm that we are heading to the right direction.
Principle 2, verse 1:13: “Then Haggai , the Lord's messenger, spoke the Lord’s message to the people, saying , ‘I am with you, says the Lord.'"
Lesson 2: The Holy Spirit empowers us to carry out God’s commands. He gives us courage, strength and ability we need. Do not hesitate to obey God in the midst of your trouble. He will equip you to carry out His commands.
