Study From the Book of Genesis,6
Today we are studying the sixth chapter of the book of Genesis. There are many biblical principles and lessons in this chapter. But I choose the two most useful ones in biblical counselling.
The passage of verses 1 to 4 is one of the most debated in the Old Testament. The most likely interpretation is that the sons of God were fallen angels. This is the view of Jewish scholars and best explains the text. It is possible that these were angels who left their proper domain as mentioned (Jude 6) and whose sin led to a special divine judgement. It may be that in this isolated case, fallen angels did assume human form and marry human women; this was a breach of God’s order of such monumental proportion that it indeed provoked God’s judgement on the world through the Flood.
But Noah lies the hope of all subsequent human history! A man and a family who by God’s grace stood out from the wickedness of their day, there would have been a new beginning on the part of God that would have omitted all of us. The phrase “walked with God” is also used of Enoch in Ch.5. It indicates a continual pattern of life-a marked contrast with the pattern of life of the rest of the people at that time. His three sons will form the family tree of the nation’s following the Flood.
God’s message to Noah was graphic and severe to build the ark. The ark was built merely to float on the water. Noah made rooms in the ark and used pitch to seal the ark against leaks. Yet he was building the largest floating box that had never been see. The ark was about 450 feet long,75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.
In strongest in contrast to God’s punishment, God established His covenant with Noah. This is the first time the word covenant is used in the Bible. The details of this covenant were given after the Flood. Here, in the midst of judgement, the Lord stooped down to meet the needs of His servant and to enter into a binding oath with him. In order to perpetuate the human family, God promised to preserve Noah’s family and every sort of animals.
