Study From the Book of Genesis,19
Today we study chapter 19 of the Book of Genesis. I choose two biblical principles and their lessons which are useful in Biblical Counselling.
Lot’s fortune had gone very well. Lot had become so enmeshed in the life of the city that he had become a ruling elder. Lot’s welcome of the two angels who appeared as two men may have been motivated out of kindness towards them as well as his sense of the dangers his city might hold for them.
The men of Sodom were aggressive homosexuals, bent on raping innocent travellers. Under circumstances, Lot showed great courage by inviting his guests to stay at his house under his protection. Lot was now in danger of seeing them abused by the aggressive mob. His desperation led him to risk the lives of his own two daughters to protect the lives of the strangers from the mob. We can see why an outcry sin of the city had gone up to the Lord.
The crazed crowd was now about to attack Lot; they resented him as an outsider even though he had risen to a position of prominence in the city. However, those who were morally blinded were now stricken with physically blinded by the angelic guests. Only the confusion and panic of these wicked men spared Lot and his family from vicious assault.
The angelic guests had completed their search and were about to bring down the judgement of God on the city. In God’s mercy, they offered an escape to Lot and his immediate family. Lot had mixed feelings about the destruction that was to come. So, Lot and family needed to be propelled from their home by physical force. Because of God’s mercy, His angels grabbed Lot and his family and brough them forcefully to safety. The destruction of these cities was an act of judgement outside the normal range of natural occurrence.
The command was clear, not to look back. Lot’s wife disobeyed. So, her destruction was sudden and turned to a mineral heap. On the morning, Abraham looked on from a distance and saw the destruction when he saw the smoke. Part of the reason for God’s grace to Lot was that God remembered Abraham. If it were not for Abraham, Lot would have died with the other inhabitants.
Lot’s daughters now conspired together to make their father drunk so that he would have sexual relations with them. We hardly approve of their action, yet their desperation was real. Should they die childless, there would be no one to carry on their family name. This was not deliberate incest on Lot’s part, the daughters alone were responsible for what happened. This shameful act of incest led to the births of two sons who would later greatly trouble Israel, Moab and Ben-Ammi.
Structure
Verses: 1-11: Sodom depravity
Verses 12-29: Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed.
Verse 30-38:the descendants of Lot.
Principle 32: verse 19:24---“Then the Lord rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah.”
Lesson 32: Everything Lot had gained during his time in Sodom; he lost in an instant. What we gain outside of God’s blessing is not worth having and eventually goes up in smoke.
Principle 33: 19:36: -----“Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father.”
Lesson 33: The sinful plan of Lot’s daughters failed even as it succeeded. They did manage to preserve their father’s family line, but in so doing they created two peoples who became vicious enemies of God’s people.
