Study From the Book of Genesis,18

Today we study chapter 18 of the Book of Genesis. I choose two biblical principles and their lessons which are useful in Biblical Counselling.

This is the fifth time the Lord appeared to Abraham since he had come into the land of Canaan. The first verse of this chapter states that God appeared to Abraham. In the second verse, Abraham speaks to three men. It is one of the appearances of the Lord Jesus accompanied by two angels. But One is greater than the angels.

In the previous chapter the focus was on Abraham, here the focus on Sarah. Sarah laughed when she heard the promise that she would get a son because she had ceased to menstruate. She acted like Abraham when he laughed in his heart, when he heard the promise. The woman of faith like her husband had believed in God’s promise. But now she found that her faith stretched to the limit. She knew the facts of life, but she would soon be greatly surprised by the One who determined them.

Then we come to the conclusion that the third man was none except the living God. Abraham had a vested interest in the city of Sodom because Lot lived there. But a moral centre in the universe that Sodom and Gomorrah sins are an affront to the righteousness of God.

Abraham was determined to go on barraging but he knew that he was arguing with God. So, he went one step at a time, pleading the case for righteous persons in smaller and smaller numbers from forty-five down to ten. Perhaps Abraham thought there were at least ten righteous persons in the city, but there were not.

Structure

Verses: 1-15: the son of promise.

Verses 16-33: Abraham intercedes for Sodom.

Principle 30: verse 18:14---“Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah have a son.”

Lesson 30: Things that we humans find impossible to do, God finds very easy. That is why we can trust all of His promises. We do not have to understand how He will fulfil them, we have only to believe that He will.

Principle 31: 18:25: -----“Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the judge of all the earth do right?”

Lesson 31: We can set assured that God, “the Judge of the earth, “will always do exactly what is right. We never have to fear that He will make or suffer a lapse in judgement.
