Study From the Book of Genesis,15

Today we study chapter 15 of the Book of Genesis. I choose two biblical principles and their lessons which are useful in Biblical Counselling.

This section is one of the texts that present the Abrahamic covenant. Here is a new incident of Abram’s life. The use of a vision is only one of the means which God interacts with His servants. This was the third appearance of the Lord to Abram since he arrived in the land of Canaan. Lord God is translated in Hebrew word Adonai Yahweh. Abram and Sarai were childless. Later on, we learn that Abram had six sons by the concubine named Katurah. According to the custom a man who was childless would adopt some one perhaps a slave to be an heir.

However, God promised Abram that by himself would have a son even in his advanced age. Even so God promised that the descendants would be innumerable, the descendants of Abram translate the Hebrew word for seed. This word is used to refer to the coming Messiah.

When God made a promise, Abram believed in the Lord. It is this believe, that save sinner from sin. Abram was not saved by the righteous living or obedience, but by believing God and so being declared righteous by Him. The only varied work is the work of faith. Even so, God’s grace enables a person to believe.

Abram had only to prepare the sacrifice and bring it to God; the Lord would enact the sign. This emphasizes the unilateral, unconditional nature of the covenant. Abram fell into the same sort of deep sleep that God placed on Adam. Abram was still aware of events around him. His trance-like state allowed him to remember these events for the rest of his life. Abram was about to experience the prescence of the Almighty. This was a moment of profound dread and holy awe.

Structure

Verses: 1-21: God’s covenant with Abram.

Principle 24: verse 15:6---“And he believed in the Lord, and He accompanied it to him for righteousness.”

Lesson 24: Even when Abram did not see how God could fulfil His gracious promise to him regarding an heir, he trusted the Lord He looked beyond what he could see to what God could see.

Principle 25: 15:16: -----“But in the fourth generation they shall return here , for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”

Lesson 25: God is more patient than we can imagine. He would wait over 400 years to give the land of promise to His people, because the wicked Canaanites had not reached the point of no return. 14/12/2025.
