Study From the Book of Genesis,13

Today we study chapter 13 of the Book of Genesis. I choose two biblical principles and their lessons which are useful in Biblical Counselling.

Abram and Sarai returned from Egypt to Negev a region where they could live with a considerable wealth of livestock, silver, and gold. From there they journeyed back to Bethel, the site where God had appeared to him. Again, Abram called on the name of the Lord.

Lot shared his uncle Abram’s prosperity to some degree. The crowding of range lands led to dispute and strife between their herdsmen. Abram acted with kindness, not wanting to fight his nephew’s family and herdsmen. Abram gave Lot his choice. In doing this, Abram not only showed a lack of self-interest, but also confidence in God’s continuing provisions for him.

Lot was greedier than Abram; he wanted the well-watered region in the plain of Jordan near dead sea. Sodom and Gomorrah, the infamous with evil people. The rest of the peoples of Canaan were given 400 years before their idolatry and wickedness demanded judgement.

The Lord reaffirmed the promise to Abram after his lack of faith in Egypt and his separation from Lot. His descendants translate the Hebrew word of seed. At times this term refers to many descendants and at other times to a unique individual (the Lord Jesus). Abram’s walk in the land is a symbolic act of possessions of the land by his and his descendants. Hebron became one of the principal centres for Abram’s stay in the land. Abram was still living in a tent, not in the cities. Abram continued to build alters to worship the living God.

Structure

Verses 1:18: Abram inherits Canaan.

Principle 21: verse 13:4---“And there Abram called on the name of the Lord.”

Lesson 21: We have no record that Abram “called on the name of the Lord” while in Egypt, where he got into trouble. How much better off we would be if we would learn that prayer is life’s greatest time saver!

Principle 22: 13:8— “—So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren. "

Lesson 22: Abram counted a good relationship with his nephew as more important than his own material prosperity. Apparently he did not worry much about his possessions, because he had seen that no one can ever outgive God.30/11/2025.
