Study From the Book of Genesis,12

Study From the Book of Genesis,12

Today we study chapter 12 of the Book of Genesis. I choose two biblical principles and their lessons which are useful in Biblical Counselling.

The name Yahweh translated as Lord, indicates that the One who spoke to Abrahm is the same Yahweh who later would form the nation of Israel and who had created all things. To the world that believes in many gods, the name of the true and living God is significant. Abraham recalled Yahweh, the Lord and acted on His Word. Abram means “exalted father.”

There are seven elements in God’s promise to Abram (Abraham later):

  1. God commanded Abram to leave his home and family, promised to create a great nation, through him.
  2. God bless Abram and Sarai included the benefits of a long and healthy life, plus wealth and importance,
  3. That name would live on long after one’s lifetime is a supreme honour.
  4. To be blessing that Abram or Abraham was under a divine order to be blessings to others.
  5. Elements 5 and 6: who ever bless Abram will be blessed and whoever curse him will be cursed.
  6. As above.
  7. The final and most significant is that all the families of the earth would be blessed through them, the Jewish people who are descended from Abram.

Canaan is the geographical stage for God’s acts of salvation. Canaan was populated with peoples involved in gross idolatry. God promised this land to be for Abram and Sarai.

God’s promise to Abram (Abraham) was fulfilled. Through the birth of Christ-direct descendant of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Judah-God fulfilled this promise as well. In Abraham’s seed (The Lord Jesus) has indeed blessed all the nations of the earth.

Structure

Verses 1:9: promises to Abram.

Verses 10-20: Abram in Egypt.

Principle 19: verse 12:10---“Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was severe in the land.”

Lesson 19: Men and women of faith must endure hardship, just like anyone else. But God wants to use adversity to deepen and strengthen our relationship with Him.

Principle 20: 12:18— “—why did you not tell me that she was your wife? ---"

Lesson 20: Abram had to learn that trusting God means locking beyond what we can see to what God sees. God does not need our half-truths and lies in order to protect and bless us.(23/11/2025).
