Study From the Book of Genesis,1
Today we are studying the first chapter of the book of Genesis. There are many biblical principles and lessons in this chapter. But I choose the two most useful ones in biblical counselling.
In the beginning, here the story of God’s creation of the heaven and earth. But no information is given here on what happened before this time. It is possible that the rise, rebellion and the judgement of Satan and fallen angels transpired before these events. Furthermore, God’s angels already have been created, Here the focus is on the creation of the material world-the heaven and the earth.
The standard Hebrew term for deity, Elohim, is in the form called the plural of majesty, or the plural of intensity. In contrast to the ordinary plural (gods). Even though the word of God is plural, the verb for created is singular.
The two words without form—void express one concept-chaos. The earth had been reduced to this state. It was not the way God first created it. Darkness is a potent biblical symbol of evil and wrong and the Spirit of God was hovering like a mother stork might hover over her nest- a potent of life to come from the dark, murky depths of the chaos.
Let there be light, express a principal theme of the Bible. God brings light into the darkness. Here God produced physical light. The New Testament records God sending His Son to be the Light. In the end, there will no longer be any darkness at all (Rev. 21:23). God said it and it was done. His command caused reality. Having examined the light, God declared it to be good- a powerful term of blessing.
The term firmament in the biblical usage means heavens. literally means something stretched out like a hammered metal. In this day, God did not say it is good. Some scholars relates that to the flood that God knew it will happen in Noah’s time as judgment of the world.
The gathering of the water and the separation of the dry land are further actions of God in establishing control over the chaos. Each act of separation and distinction brings order out of disorder. Each act also demonstrates the Lord’s power and wisdom.
The broad words grass, tree, and fruit tree encompass all plants. The reference to seed and of all kind speaks of the fact that the plant kingdom will continue to reproduce.
The creation of the sun, moon, and stars is described in general term spells out of details. They produce the division between day and night. The principal issue is that God alone is in control.
According to its kind suggests the capability to produce themselves. God not only made the living creature, but He gave them the power to propagate and to proliferate, to fill the air and the seas in great numbers and in wonderful variety.
Let Us make man in Our image emphasizes the majesty of the speaker. Furthermore, the use of a plural for God allows us for the later revelation of the Trinity. In Our image as the image of God is certain moral, ethical, and intellectual. All these characteristics of man and woman have been distorted by the entrance of sin. Here the word is generic, including male and female. The misuse of human sexuality is soundly condemned in Scripture as in Lev.18.
God created man and women and order them to subdue the earth and rule it. However, sin would ruin the earth, and people would have to expend great effort to live there. Furthermore, Satan would defy the will of God and make all good effort difficult.
Many suggest that Adam and Eve were vegetarians because God gave them every herb and every tree to feed. However, that been changed after the flood at the time of Noah. This chapter ends by God’s saying everything He had made was very good. So, the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
Structure:
Verses 1-31: the history of creation.
Principle 1: verse 1: 22- ----"And God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the sea, and let birds multiply on the earth’.”
Lesson 1: It is God’s nature to “bless” the living creatures He makes. He always wants their-and our-best.
Principle verse 2,1:31: ----” Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So, the evening and the morning were the sixth day.”
Lesson 2: Everything that God made was not only “good,” but “very good.” All the good we see around us is nothing but an overflow of the goodness that flows out of God’s generous heart.7/9/2025.
