Study From the Book of First Cornithians,6
Today we study chapter 5 of the First Corinthians in this 6th part of the series. As usual we pick a couple of biblical principles that can by suitable to be applied in biblical counselling either as a self-help or in counselling others.
Chapter 5 deals with a Christian believer who had an adultery relationship with his mother in law. And it appeared to be tolerated by the church members there. So we see here the apostle Paul was very firm with this sin and he applied a discipline that only an apostle can apply which is “deliver such a one to Satan.” It is harsh but is necessary for such the newly born church.
In chapter 5, the apostle Paul deals with two main topics which are around this kind of sin:
Principle 9 verse 5:2 “- And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you.”
Lesson 9: Apparently the Corinthians felt proud that they could tolerate such a shocking sin. Perhaps they congratulated themselves that their love could overlook the kind of behaviour that ordinarily brought condemnation.
Principle 10 verse 5:11 “– But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother , who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler or a drinker, or an extortioner - not even to eat with such a person.”
Lesson 10: This kind of church disciple does not sound either loving or kind to many today. However it is God's commands and who loves the Lord should keep His commands. 2/9/2018
