Study From the Book of Acts,2
Today we study the second chapter of the Book of Acts and we choose two biblical principles and their lessons which are useful in Biblical Counselling.
Pentecost was one of the three major Jewish festivals. Pentecost was also known as the feast of the weeks, the first fruits of the Wheat Harvest and the Day of First fruits. During this harvest, the Jews brought to God the first fruit of their harvest in thanksgiving expecting that God would give the rest of the harvest as His blessing. This particular Day of Pentecost was the day of first fruit of Christ’s church, the beginning of the great harvest of souls who would come to know Christ and be joined together through the work of the Holy Spirit.
After the great gathering, came the visual manifestation of God in divided tongues of fire. Fire often indicated the presence of God in the Old Testament. Peter then stood and began his sermon by quoting Joel 2:28-32: God final act of salvation began with the pouring out of His Spirit. This final act of deliverance will continue to the end of this age. Peter exhorted the listeners to repent. In other words, each person had to make the declaration to God in faith and be baptised as a public declaration that a person’s sins have been forgiven because of the finished work of Christ in the Cross. Three thousand souls were saved as a response to Peter’s sermon.
Structure:
Verses 1-4: coming of the Holy Spirit.
Verses 5-13: the crowd’s response.
Verses 14-39: Peter’s sermon.
Verses 40-47: a vital church grows.
Principle 3: verse 2:4- “…And they were all filled with Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
Lesson 3: to demonstrate to the disciples and to the unbelieving world that the Spirit had come in power on the church in a new way, every believer in the Upper Room began to speak in languages they had never learned.
Principle 4: verse 2_42- “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrines and fellowship in the breaking of bread and in prayers.”
Lesson 4: To grow in faith and to fulfil the mission Jesus has given to us, we must regularly gather together for instruction, worship, encouragement, and prayer. God never calls any Christian to a solitary life of faith.9/2/2025
