Study From the Second Epistle of Paul to Timothy,2
Today is the second part of the series where we study chapter one. As usual we pick up a couple of biblical principles and lessons that can be useful in biblical counselling.
In chapter one, after greeting, Paul instructs his son in faith to not be ashamed of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ as in it only there is the truth of the eternal life. He encourages him to follow the scripture teaching of his mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois. Paul continues in his advice by instructing him to be loyal to the faith.
Structure:
Verse 1:2: greeting
Verse 3:7: Timothy’s heritage and faith
Verse 8:12: Timothy needs not to be ashamed of the gospel
Verse 13:17: Timothy must be loyal to the faith
Principle 1, verse 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
Lesson 1: Paul’s words to Timothy are equally God’s words to us. God gives us “a spirit of power and of love and of a sound mind.” God instructs us to respond to every person or situation that we fear, with God’s power, God’s love and God’s mind.
Principle 2, verse 1:6: “ – therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you.”
Lesson 2: God never takes away the spiritual gifts He bestows upon us (Rom.11:29), but they can lose their sharp edge of effectiveness through our neglect. God instructs us to use our gifts for the benefit of His people (1 Pet. 4:10).
